In Lieu Of Favors

Favors- my mom thinks they are pointless I say they are a nice way to thank your guests for being part of your special day. I have struggled with what to do for favors b/c I don't think anyone will want a picture frame on their mantle that says Shannon & Jimmy 10.03.2009, or a CD of OUR favorite songs, or a deck of cards with our faces on them. So my next idea was FOOD! Everyone loves food! So we were going to do/make caramel apples for everyone, who doesn't love a caramel apple? Well then the dilemma was do we make them ourselves or order them- if we make them we'd have to do it just days or the day before the wedding (STRESS!), if we order them we have to worry about them arriving in time and fresh (DRAMA!). So I quickly crossed that idea from the list for the sake of making life easy. So...what do we do? We can't NOT give out favors!

Then my eyes were opened to the idea of charity donations. I have heard of accepting donations to your favorite charity in lieu of wedding gifts for yourselves but never as favors. I think this is a brilliant idea and one we are going to glady participate in. Future Mr's maternal grandmother passed away after losing the battle to pancreatic cancer. She will be the only grandparent from both of our families not present on our joyous day. In her honor we will be making a charitable donation to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network I think this is a wonderful way to include her in our special day and hopefully bring us one step closer to putting an end to cancer once and for all.

  1. My husband and I did donations instead of favors as well and I am sooo glad we did. We picked two charities that were close to us - a local DC charity and the local chapter of the National Down Syndrome Society. Friends of ours have a child with Down Syndrome and it touched them so much - they were in tears.
