Backyard Summer Fun!

This post is part of a compensated campaign with Mom It Forward Blogger Network and H2OGO! but all my opinions are my own.

Summa summa summa time, summa time.

That's the first thing that pops into my head on the first 80 degree day we have here in Ohio.  I love summer, I live for summer.  My kids are spoiled rotten with activities from about May-September and I make no apologies for that.  I want them outside all the time.  I want all the vitamin D.  I love the warm sun on my face.  I love the early mornings and the late nights.  Summer is my favorite.

Last summer we were flooded with things to do and while it was exhausting at times, I wouldn't change it for the world.  We made so many fun memories last year and I can only hope this summer can measure up.  We camped, we boated, we vacationed with friends, we hit up the beach, we ate too many s'mores but most of all we had fun.

One thing I want to do differently this summer is to have more backyard fun.  Going to the zoo and pool and splash pads {oh my!} are fun but so is playing right in our backyard.  The best part of backyard fun is it's far less stress.  Need to go to the potty?  Go right inside.  Need a snack? Let me grab one from the kitchen.  Ready for a nap?  Your room is right down the hall.  There's no packing a bag and snacks and change of clothes and enough water, we have everything right at our fingertips at home.  Plus, we have a pretty amazing yard.

Yesterday we had our first 80 degree, blue skies, sun shinning day so I told the kids we could finally set up the water slide they've been eye-balling since it arrived in the mail last week.  Day one of backyard fun commenced.  It was amazing.  They played on that thing from lunch until bedtime yesterday only to break for snacks, potty and nap {for James}.  They loved jumping on the "pillow".  Bear puppy was so confused, he thought the sprayers were a drinking fountain for him.

Last night, once we settled down for the night, Kendall said to me, "Mom, we have the best house.  We have the water slide, a sand table, a swing set, the bounce house, soccer balls, bubbles, chalk, jump ropes. We  have everything!".  And she's right, we do. We have it all right here in our backyard {here's a snap from our yard last night}.

Gorgeous right?  I mean we need a whole team of landscapers to come out and maintain it BUT it's so pretty in the summer.  It's shaded but gets sun in all the right spots {like right where I was standing/laying out yesterday}.  We have one acre but lucky for us it's all farmland behind/to the side of us so it seems like it's much bigger.

We live in the country, if you couldn't tell, so we spend a lot of time driving places.  Anything "fun" takes us at least 20-30 minutes to get to and while it's worth it some days other days it would be nice to just stick around here.  As Kendall mentions, we have more than enough to keep us busy here.  I am notorious for thinking the grass is greener when it comes to doing things outside of the home.  I always think everyone else has a better house, the kids have more fun here/there, and I have no real reason for thinking that way.  So this year I am determined to have an amazing summer right here in our very own backyard. Who knows, maybe I'll even get crazy and host a weekly family dinner under the string lights like The Bravermans.

Does this sound like a tradition you'd like to adopt too?  H2OGO! wants to help!  One lucky reader will be chosen to win the three person water slide that's pictured above.  To be entered to win leave me a comment telling me what YOUR favorite outdoor summer activity is. Good luck!

Because, Pictures

Everyone loves a post with pictures, right?  I mean back in the day it was taboo to write a post and NOT include pictures.  But times are a changing so maybe it's cool NOT to put pictures in a post.  What do I know?

I still love pictures and I wanted to share a few of my favorites from this summer because we had a pretty great one!

Yep, we had a pretty good summer.  I'm going to miss the sunshine, warm air, carefree pool days.  Until next year...

My Sweet Summer Is Gone

As I sit here and type this post I'm greeted by the cool autumn breeze blowing through my kitchen window, which has been closed for far too long due to the summers heat.  I'm wearing fleece pants, a hoodie, and "at home" socks-you know the super-thick, cozy ones with the grippy things on the bottom?

I'm equally happy and sad about this.

I love summer.  The hotter the better.  I love the sunshine, going to the pool, eating ice cream for dinner, the beach, wearing shorts, going to the park, the easiness of life that takes place for three months out of the year.  Yes, summer is my favorite season.

But, I also love fall.  Who doesn't?  If I needed further proof that fall is everyone's favorite, I can just look at Instagram.  It's already full of Pumpkin Spice Lattes {bleh}, fall candles {guilty as charged}, and people digging out there riding boots.  I get it, it's exciting to open the windows, snuggle up in a hoodie, and smell all the things pumpkin.  But it also means that winter, dreaded white-death, is upon us and after the winter that nearly killed the moms I am not looking forward to what's next.

Kendall starts PreK-4 today.  Or preschool as I like to call it.  While I'm looking forward to this for her, the schedule, learning, being around other kids her age, not having to limit her activities because of a certain one-year-old, I am going to miss the laziness of our summer days.  Yesterday we were casually swimming, soaking up our last pool day of the year, and today we will be on a time crunch to get breakfast in our tummies, hair brushed, bodies dressed and out the door on time.

Friday was our last week day of summer and I really had nothing planned.  I had things that I wanted/needed to do but for the most part was unscheduled.  We had preschool open house from 9-10 and that went just as I figured.  Kendall was shy the first 55 minutes and then opened up and became more herself for the last five.  It's fine, she'll be fine today {that's what I keep telling myself}.

We had been invited to an Eric Carle event at our local Gymboree* the same day and, being as her preschool theme is also Eric Carle this year, I wanted to go.  I love Eric Carle books, Kendall's favorite is The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and I knew it'd be fun for her.  She had a blast!  It was a simple event but perfectly age appropriate and I even got to do some shopping for our fall family pictures while she painted a caterpillar and listened to story time.

We threw money in the fountains, made wishes, shopped a little more, ran through the splash pad and topped our morning with a little bit of ice cream for lunch.  Nothing was scheduled, I wasn't worried about naps or being anywhere on time.  We just went with the flow and it was exactly as the last day of summer should be, carefree and easy.  It's amazing, when I let go my kids are happier and we have such a better day.  I need to remember this when we are stuck in the house this winter.

Now our days are going to be scheduled.  Teeth will need to be brushed by 8 o'clock.  There will be no more staying up a little late catching fireflies.  No more ice cream for dinner.  While part of me likes the idea of a routine the other, bigger part of me is sad to see the easy breezy summer days go away.

Maybe I can convince Jimmy to move to California...

Dads vs Moms- At The Pool

Tuesday night we went to the pool as a family.  It was a spur of the moment idea but something I want to do more often.  We ate dinner early and I remembered thinking to myself, "Oh sure eat this HUGE dinner right before you put on a bathing suit and head to the PUBLIC pool."  But such is life and we went and had the time of our lives.  And even better it made for a very easy bedtime.  I'm thinking we should go to the pool every night now.

As we were winding down to leave, I was feeding James his bottle and Jimmy was playing with Kendall for the last 15 minutes before the pool closed.  I sat in that pool chair and looked around at the few people who were still left and it was mostly dads.  It was cute to see all the dads huddled around the little, double slide watching their pride and joy come swooshing down into the water, happy as a lark.  They all had smiles on their faces and you could see the pride radiating from their bodies.  It was adorable.

I also noticed how confident they all looked.  None of them were standing in an awkward position, as to not expose their "problem areas".  They weren't afraid to bend over and have their belly hang over their trunks a little bit.  They didn't have their hands placed over their stomachs.  Nothing.  They were just standing their, all exposed, and owning it.  And I thought, I wish women would embrace this.

I looked around at the moms who were there.  One had a brand new, I mean fresh out of the oven, baby and she was rocking her bikini.  And she looked great, I could only wish I looked that good that soon after giving birth.  She looked confident and happy.  As a matter of fact, the first time I saw her she was eating a massive cheese burger and her husband was chowing down on a salad and I kind of had a chuckle.  But besides this one mom it seemed like the others were all self conscious, it made me sad.

Why can't moms be more confident like the dads.  Some of these dads were in great shape and others had a little belly and it didn't matter.  None of them even wore a t-shirt to cover up.  The moms on the other hand were quick to grab a towel or their cover-up as soon as they were out of the water. Even the ones with rocking bodies.

I know that everyone has their hang ups when it comes to their bodies.  Even the ones who seem to have the most perfect physique can find some kind of flaw.  I've been working my butt off and I still could give you a laundry list of things I'd like to improve on.  But why?  Why can't we be more like the dads.  Their bodies were far from perfect but I doubt they eat themselves up over it when they are putting on their trunks.  They were just having fun with their kids and not worrying about their flaws.

I learned a lot about myself in that short period of time while feeding my son.  I am going to let go of my insecurities, not worry about my silly belly pooch when I bend over, and just HAVE FUN with my kids.  We only have this one, precious life and it's far to short to worry about things like cellulite.  Besides, I have that pooch and those stretchmarks because of them and they are worth everything.

On Why I Could Never Be Amish

So this weekend was one for the memory books.  Or not. Not sure if you all heard about the wicked storms that blew through the Midwest Friday night but they were brutal.  We hadn't had rain in weeks, like nada, so we had all been doing rain dances in the privacy of our own homes and boy did we get it.
Friday night, around 4:30, I noticed it was looking a little gloomy outside.  I had only seen a 20% chance of rain for the day so we didn't think much of it.  Until it got dark at 5 pm and the winds got tornado-like.  We hauled ass to the basement just in time for the power to go out, at 5 pm, Friday night.
Sure at first it was all fun in games as we sat in the dark basement and played with old, forgotten toys by candlelight. {I hide some of Kendall's super baby-ish toys down there in hopes of bringing them out later and she'll think they're new again}.  We made hand puppets on the wall with the "fiflight" {flashlight} shadows and even had a couple cold ones {us, not her} and all was fine with the world.  Until I started to get hungry and it started to get really dark.  To which I said to Jimmy, "what do the Amish do when it gets dark?" {yes, I'm ignorant} and he said, "go to bed".
F*ck, I can't be Amish.  I knew I should have made that homemade pizza earlier and now the dough is just sitting in the won't-be-cold-much-longer fridge.
Thank God for cell phones {yet another reason why I could never be Amish}, we called my in-laws and they had power, horray!, so we packed up and headed in their direction, thinking by the time we had some dinner, played and headed home we'd return to a fully powered home.
Wrong.
We came home to a pitch black, hot and powerless house.  My idea of hell on Earth.  I wish I could say that I handled the situation with grace and ease, knowing that it wouldn't last for-ever, but I whined, pouted, I may have even stomped a little.  My sweet husband thought this was a perfect opportunity to be romantic and lit every candle in the house and poured me a glass of luke-warm wine.  To which I scoffed and went to bed.  In our hot, fan-less room.
Morning came, still no power.  Poor Kendall had to sleep in an oven with no baby crack sound machine, all night.  See, even she could not be Amish.
Thank God I married an electrician.  By 8 o'clock we had a generator up and running and our fridge could be opened and fans were on, making it a little more comfortable.  But?  I still whined.  I mean sure we had air flow but we didn't have TV and we didn't have Internet.  The Amish are rolling their eyes at this point.
We spent most of the day Saturday at the in-laws {again}.  I took a warm shower, curled my hair with my mother-in-laws amazing Hot Tools curling iron and caught up on RHOC, it was bliss.  I even took the pizza dough over to their house and made a delicious homemade pizza.  Electricity for the win!
My husband worked hard to get our air conditioner to run on the generator and thankfully we were able to get it cooled down enough to come home Saturday night.  By then it was comical to me.  Once we put Kendall down in her only semi-hot room we sat outside with the neighbors, Solo cup full of wine, and watched fireworks from the neighboring town.  It wasn't so bad, I guess.
The thing is, we didn't have it that bad. I mean besides being a tad bit warmer at night and not having a baby monitor to hear KP {she's just across the hall anyway}, life wasn't that much different than "normal".  I mean our iPhones still worked {for the most part} so we were still "connected" and able to get the necessary updates we needed regarding the state of our misery.  See, I could not be Amish.
I woke up a few times Saturday night hoping to see the glare of our alarm clock but nope, nada. Sunday morning was hot and coffee-less and I was starting to get over it. I mean, we had a generator and that's a lot more than most people in our area could say.  We had plans to go see my BFFs brand new baby girl so in an effort to preserve all the food I had just bought Friday morning we decided to have a clean-out-the-fridge party.  Just as I was cutting up 2 boxes of strawberries, 2 bundles of grapes, 3 containers of blueberries and a bunch of celery Jimmy came running in,"THE POWER IS ON!".  I'm pretty sure I danced for 10 minutes straight.
I may not like living with no lights, Internet, air conditioning or TV but I do love living with my husband.  As bratty as I was, and I was, he took my bitterness with a grain of salt.  He never once told me to "suck it up" or "get over it". Instead he just worked his hiney off to make this house as comfortable and "normal" as possible in spite of our power-less situation.  God knew what he was doing when he crossed our paths that January day, 4 years ago.
So, even though this weekend didn't go as planned, it was a learning experience and one that I needed to be taught.  While I do love my warm showers and Pinterest, I know that that's not what's important in life.  Being surrounded by good people who you love and who love you is what matters. This weekend we were surrounded by love, from one another and from our families, and that means more than anything electric could.  I think it's safe to say, in spite of the warm wine and hot house, this weekend brought us closer together.  And, for that, I am thankful.
Maybe the Amish are on to something?

Summer Must Haves

Perhaps "must haves" isn't the best term but these are some products that get me through the summer months.  Things I love that make my summer better, me prettier, and my home smell great.
 Hair
I am so glad to be back to my roots blonde this summer.  Blondes have more fun, right?  Especially in the summer. Just something about blonde hair and bronze skin that makes me happy.  Superficial?  Yes, absolutely.  But one thing that is not awesome about being blonde in the summer, and there's just one reason, is discoloration from swimming and such.  No one likes blonde with a tint of chlorine green, no one.  That's where Aveda Blue Malva comes in.
This stuff is bomb.com.  If you are blonde just trust me and run to your closest Aveda store or order it online NOW.  I started using it when our water softener broke and our water had tons of iron in it, causing my hair to have a tint of orange in it.  No bueno.  I bought this stuff and instantly noticed a difference.  Now I use it about once a week and the day I use it I can always tell that my hair is brighter, blonder.  Love.

Face
Pretty sure I've already shared my love for this before but it's worth repeating.  I love love love bronzer.  I just started using it about a year ago and find myself asking why it took so long.  It just gives you such a nice glow and makes the need for foundation almost nonexistent.  I've tried a couple over the past year but Avon's Glowdacious by mark is my favorite, and I'm not just saying that.
This stuff is awesome because of it's 3 tone color.  You just swirl your brush around all three colors and swipe over your whole face.  Better yet?  It's got just a little bit of shimmer which I LOVE.  I definitely don't leave home without this in the summer.

Body
Because I am not a fan of skin cancer, and being a toddler mom doesn't leave much time for laying out poolside, I have been forced to do the fake bake.  And no I'm not talking about tanning beds, who do I look like, Tan Mom?  Anywho, I've tried a slew of lotions, some smell, some leave you streaky or worse yet, orange.  No gracias.  Well welcome to your life L'Oreal Sublime.
It is the best for instant gratification.  It's bronze in color which helps eliminate the "did I put some there?" factor.  It works almost immediately too, this is the stuff I use if I have somewhere to go today or am wearing neon pink shorts right now.  It's bees knees and doesn't smell too bad.  I remember I used it when I was pregnant and people couldn't believe my "glow" and literally asked if I had been tanning.   As if!

Home
Scentsy is all the rage right now, if you haven't picked up a warmer and at least 5 scents by now you are living in a cave.  Truth.  It's perfect for mamas of toddlers because it doesn't warm above body temperature so there is no risk of burning or catching your house on fire.  Win, win.  I recently bought a bunch of summer scents and I'm so glad I did.  My house smells like the beach, summer, tropical vacations every day.
Skinny Dippin, Coconut Lemon Chiffon, Coconut Lemongrass, and Camu Camu are four of my favorites I've picked up this year.  I think it's safe to say I'm addicted and think everyone needs to own at least one, if not all, of these scents.  Lucky for me Jimmy loves this stuff too so I don't get in trouble for buying more!more!more!

So those are some of my summer must-haves!  What are you loving this summer?

Speaking of summer must haves, you MUST have a camera to document all your fun summer-ness.  Well head over to GroopDealz {one of my favorite discount sites!} and enter to win a Nikon D3100 DSLR!  The contest ends tomorrow at noon so go NOW!

Enjoying The Moment

Life is good right now.  Really good. Blame it on the long summer days.  The warm nights sipping some wine with a great man.  The endless smiles from a happy park-loving girl.  I call it pure awesomeness.
I love that this summer I'm actually getting to enjoy every minute because I'm not dreading going to work and then spending all days inside when all I want to do is be outside.  Some days I find myself not wanting to leave the house just because it's so!much!work! with a toddler and then I'm quickly reminded how all I wanted last summer was to take her to the park or the pool or a nature hike or anything outside but I was stuck in a cubicle.
The other day I was reminded of this when Kendall wanted me to push her around in her doll stroller for the millionth time and my back was over it! I told her "no more" and lied that the stroller was broken.  Then I remembered that that is something so small that I can do for her but it makes her SO happy.  And so I told her to hop in and took her on one last spin. And you know what?  That was all she needed, she didn't ask for another ride after that.
It's the little things.
I was driving past my old workplace tonight, right around the time I'd be getting off, and I was so glad to 1. not be stuck in that traffic and 2. be headed to get ice cream with my family instead of just getting home.  We've been eating dinner much earlier these days {except when Jimmy has school} and it makes our evenings seem so much longer and less stressful. Now we have time to go get ice cream or to the park at night and that is the stuff I live for.
This weekend was full of lots of friends and family time too and we needed that.  Jimmy's been working side jobs just as much as he works his real job and it's really been taking a toll on him {and me}.  A few weeks ago he finished his last side job and said that it would be his last for a while.  I don't know which of us was more relieved.  Since then we've been doing a lot more family oriented things and it's been worth more than the side job money could ever be.
I've really started to soak up each day lately.  I'm not sure what it is but something in me has changed, made me more sentimental and I like it. I feel like my relationship with my friends has improved lately and we are closer.  I definitely feel like the bond with Kendall has gotten stronger.  As for me and Jimmy?  I feel like we're in a better place today than we've ever been.
This is what life is about, enjoying the moments.  This is where I'm meant to be and I couldn't be happier.
