MTV Generation

Did you guys watch MTV growing up?  Singled Out? Bevis & Butthead?  TRL?  I am pretty sure I lived for their "quality" programming.  This was before Jersey Shore and {my favorite} Teen Mom took over and pretty much became the only actual "shows" still on this music video channel.
I used to rush home from school to watch TRL. I even recorded {on a VHS tape} Britney {we're on a first name basis} doing the Oops I Did It Again dance and practiced it day after day till I got it just right.  Did I mention I wanted to be a back up dancer for Miss Spears?  Still do. Do they even show music videos on that channel anymore?  I can remember all the hype whenever a new video was coming out from Brit-Brit or MJ and it was talked about for weeks and there was most likely a countdown too.  Gah the good ole days.
I loved all the shit-talking that went on on TRL too.  Remember when Xtina threw the digs at Britney or when Carson scolded Shannen Dougherty for being a no-show?  I mean you never knew what was going to happen there.  Not to mention the CRAY CRAY fans!  Gah I always wanted to be on the streets yelling up at Carson, I didn't even care that I'd never actually make it into the studio!
I remember The Real World when the biggest scandal was someone not showing up for their "job" or having an identity crisis because the show didn't fit in with their morals.   Now it's just a bunch of drunk horny boys and girls looking to party and get it on, blech.  Or wait, is that Jersey Shore?  Same difference.
Was I the only Tom Green fan?  I mean, no, I didn't like him marrying my girl, Drew Barrymore, but I did find him quite hilarious.  "My bum is on your lips".  Never gets old.  What happened to him anyway?  Is he still alive?
Oh and the VMAs...the way they used to be.  I mean I can't even tell you the last time I watched the VMAs because they are just so lackluster these days.  I remember all the hype over what Britney would do next and who would Eminem offend this time?  Now it's like what color is Katy Perry's hair and why is Nicki Minaj trying to be like Lady Gaga?  AKA, total snozefest.
Remember how they'd always come up with cool and always changing commercials?  I have no point of reference here only that I remember watching music videos {when they still played videos} while I was getting ready for school and always getting excited to see what the transitional commercial was going to be.
And I'm pretty sure I got all of my news from MTV. Not just MTV News either. I remember watching MTV when 9/11 happened, MTV people.  Not CNN, not our local news, MTV!  And I'm pretty sure PDiddy and his always on TRL appearances got me to Rock The Vote in 2004 {I think}.
I also got my workout from them.  One summer I did The Daily Burn every "morning" at 11 o'clock.  And I'm pretty sure I'm the only one that did because it went away and never came back.  I did, however, buy the VHS and never did it again.  But it was fun while it lasted, promise.
Oh and spring break! Gah I LOOOOOVED MTV Spring Break!  They would play all sorts of competitions and dating shows that were just morally incorrect but oh so delicious to watch.  In fact, I'm pretty sure a lot of today's reality shows got their ideas from MTV Spring Break.
I remember how Singled-Out was on EVERY time I turned on channel 37 {in Hometown, OH anyway}.  I used to hate it.  Sure it was a fun little show and Jenny McCarthy was hilarious, vulgar but yet totally adorable  {followed by Carmen} but COME ON!  I mean I think I had seen every episode at least as many times as I've seen every episode of Saved By The Bell and Full House, but it's totally not the same the second, third, 50th time around.  But then?  When it mysteriously went off the air with no explanation, I was sad.  I missed it!  I missed the reruns.  I even remember looking for it on DVD {back in the day, not yesterday or anything} and coming up empty.
I just wonder what Kendall's generation will have that could ever, will ever, be as great as MTV.  Will there even be MTV in 2030? Gah I hope so.  And I hope they start playing music videos again.

  2. Old MTV was amazing...remember Daria?! C and I just bought the entire series on DVD and it was so worth it.

Also you can't mention TRL without discussing Mariah Carey's mental breakdown when she showed up wearing a Loverboy t-shirt and had an ice cream truck she hand decorated in glitter.

  3. Simply put, I remember when MTV was about music videos, not horrible reality TV (that I watch).

  4. Agreed. Flashbacks for sure. I miss the spring break ones too. I would sit, literally, all day watching every.single.show for spring break. And Carson from TRL.. I wanted to marry him. Sigh.

  5. Now the kids have YouTube. That is my 10-year old daughter's favorite thing to watch, anytime, anywhere. I watched MTV from the very beginning. I remember the first season of the Real World, and how it was so fresh and different. Ha, not so anymore! Hanging out with friends, just watching videos on MTV for hours. Now they huddle around the computer watching YouTube videos. It fits more with this generation's need for immediate gratification. No more waiting and waiting and waiting...hoping they'd play your favorite video! Nope, now just type it in the search bar and watch whatever you want instantly.

  7. Too funny! I remember all of this. Nothing will ever replace the greatness that was TRL. I used to race home from school to watch it too, and then watch the re-run later that night on the phone with my best friend. We'd sit there and discuss whether *NSYNC or BSB would be the #1 video that day. Oh I miss the late 90s!

  8. Oh my how I miss the old MTV!! Don't forget My So Called Life. LOVED that show and was so bummed when they just took it off. Right in the middle. I bought the DVD's and it is so funny to watch now. Especially since it just ends and doesn't make sence.

  13. So true! What's funny is that Tom Green is in Australia right now on a comedy tour. I heard him on the radio the other day and was like, Whoa -- blast from the past!

Remember when he was dating Jennifer Love Hewitt and she would come on there and her and Carson would be all like aww my gf is here. BEFORE their UGLY break up! haha
