Dinner With The Dews

Remember this little series I used to do, Dinner With The Dews. I would share a yummy, home-cooked, husband approved meal and they were mostly simple with the occasional doozie thrown in for good measure.  It was fun, wasn't it?  I loved finding new, easy recipes and it's been a while since I shared one with you.

Well you want to know why?  I'll give you a hint.  It comes in a box.  Has more sodium than your weekly allowance.  It doesn't taste very good.  Husbands love it.  Have you guessed it yet?

Hamburger Helper.

That's what's happened.  And I'm embarrassed by it. This is not my definition of dinner.  This is not quality food.  This is not a healthy meal option.  But?  My husband {and apparently all others} loves it.  He likes the Tuna Helper even more. I must say, if I had my choice, I'd chose the Tuna over the Hamburger any day.  But still!  This is not food, Jimmy.

I posted this picture to Instagram last week and got tons of hits.  "My husband would be so happy if he came home and I was cooking this.".  This is XX favorite!".  "XX LOVES HH!"  I mean husbands everywhere go crazy for this box of slop.  That's exactly what it is.  Don't let the picture on the front fool you, it looked like dog food.  Even my pretty dishes couldn't make it look edible.

Although the last time I was stocking up on Jimmy's favorite food, I did notice they have healthier versions.  Whole wheat, if you will.  I was tempted but, if I know my husband, he would frown upon messing with his tasty treat.

I think it's something about his youth.  Before we were living together he ate this crap all the time.  He would make it for the week and pack it in his lunches for work every day.  That all came to a screeching halt when I took over the kitchen.  That is, until recently.  He decided he wanted to start that tradition again and who am I to stop him.  It does make packing his lunches easier.

So, is your husband a HH lover too?  Do you make this crap?  If you do and you have some fancy way to make it tastier, please share.  Anything has to be better than straight out of the box.  I did see that Betty Crocker had a "helpful hint" on the side of the box where I could go online and find more!great!recipes! but I'm just not buying what she's selling.  I can't imagine it'll taste, or look, any better than dog food.  Woof.

  1. Yeah Robbie loves this crap! He likes to cut up green peppers and onions and add it in there. It gives it a little more flavor I guess but still not great!

  2. A few weeks ago I made homemade (like, from scratch) Stuffed Mexican Peppers in the crockpot. As we were eating I asked Shawn if he liked it. He replied, "oh yeah, it's great - tastes just like Hamburger Helper." WTF! I don't get it - I agree with you, that stuff shouldn't even be considered food! Yuck!

  3. J loves it too, and unfortunately so does my toddler!! Ugh. He just makes it straight out the box, some are okay but if rather put the effort into something delicious!

  4. Your a better wife than me because I refuse to buy this crap. I bought it when we first lived together bc the hubs said he liked it. I think the box itself tastes better than the actual food. I haven't made it for years and even then only made it like twice. I have friends though who love it. Maybe try throwing in fresh veggies? Peppers, onions, garlic??

  5. I'm proud to say I've never in my life had or made any version of HH. In fact, the thought of Tuna Helper (whatever that entails) makes me want to throw up a little bit. But hey, if it's easy and the husband loves it, I guess that's a win! :)

  6. When I was younger I used to love Hamburger Helper, then I married my husband who is a good cook and got spoiled and now I can't eat the crap. Makes me nauseous just thinking about it. My husband is still willing to eat it but doesn't really prefer it eithers. We would rather make our own version of it.

  7. I try and keep a box of HH in the pantry as a backup dinner. If the day gets by me, if the toddler won't eat anything else, ect. this meal always works. It's quick, and well like you've pointed out husbands go crazy for it! I try and stay away from it but sometimes it's just best to start browning your meat and pour some wine :)

  10. My husband LOVES this crap as well, I even will cook it for him to have for leftovers for lunch. I have yet to find a way to make it taste good.

Good to know I'm not the only one that feels this way.

  12. My husband (and W for that matter) like it too. I've seen and I think pinned some recipes to make your own. I think I might have to give that a shot. It is SUPER convenient though!

  13. My mom made a skillet lasagna type HH meal that was very easy. Basically just brown hamburger, drain, add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, any other veggies you would want, and cook together for about five minutes. Then add any small pasta you have. Small meaning not lasagna noodles or spaghetti. You don't have to cook it before hand. Put lid on skillet and cook until pasta is done. Stirring occasionally.
It is really easy and very good. It was one of my mom's go to meals when she didn't know what to make for dinner.

  14. We have a box of HH and a can of Ravioli in the pantry. Neither of which I purchased (although J does all the grocery shopping) and neither of which I will eat. HH makes me want to throw up. So, nights when I have conferences or when he's hungry on the weekend he can make it, eat it, and clean it up. But I'll have nothing to do with it! haha I don't know how men like this stuff!

  15. While B used to enjoy it, his taste buds have changed since we met! And since I do the grocery shopping, it doesn't happen!

  16. Sloppy joe flavor is the best. I usually pair it with a side of broccoli to make it seem healthier.

  17. My husband lived on this when we met, I cooked it once and swore I never would again. I did one more time when our power was out and it was all I could find. Men like some gross food....

  18. My dad made this all the time when my brother and I were little. He taught us to put a dollop of sour cream in it (regardless of the flavor, although I wouldnt reccomend it with any of the ethinc varieties), and I still eat it that way now. I usually make it once a year or so just for nostalgia purposes or if we are especially low on groceries/money. Try the sour cream in it...it might make it more tolerable
