SO WHAT! Wednesday

Life After I DewThis week I'm saying SO WHAT if...

A home theater has changed my marriage.

Our basement is finished and livable however we've never used it as a living space.  We've had a couch, chair and TV down there for close to 4 years.  When we first moved in {pre babies} Jimmy would go down there to play xbox but those days are long gone.  Now the xbox is in our living room so we can watch Netflix and our basement is abandoned and more of a storage room than a living space.

We've talked about what to do with that part of our house for a while now.  Move the playroom?  No, I like the playroom being on the main level.  A rec room?  Too expensive and I can't even begin to imagine how we'd get a pool table down there.  A theater room?  SOLD!

Well I wasn't thrilled with the idea at first because there are so many other things I want to get before I hang out in that room {it's filled with deer heads and pheasants}. I want to get a new couch in our living room and move our current couch down there.  I want to clean the carpets.  But Jimmy was hearing none of this and proceeded.

We don't have a new couch just yet and the carpets still need to be cleaned but we've had a "home theater" for about a week now and it's made our marriage so much better.

Sounds silly, huh?

That's what Jimmy said when I said that to him too.

I love this area now.  Once we put the kiddies to bed we escape to this new part of our house and it's like we are in a whole new world.  It's strange, really.  It's quiet, there are no kid toys scattered everywhere, we can't hear the dryer tumbling clothes.  Our living room couch is a sectional and in the basement we just have a plain ole sofa and so we get to snuggle close.  We can talk without interruption.  It's perfect.  It's like our own little husband wife area and nothing and no one can bother us when we're down there.

It's funny how it's worked, really.  We've had this room for 4 years and we didn't do much to it to "transform" it, yet it feels like a completely different world.  We love it and I think it's the best idea my husband has had, besides choosing to marry me.

  1. That's an awesome idea, especially for the peace and quiet! Makes me wish I had a basement instead of a crawl space :)

  2. That has got to be cutest idea I've ever heard. I'm so happy it worked out for you and your marriage. I can see how having your own get together spot is important. My hubby and I make it a point every night before tucking in to spend 30-45 mins watching a show together. This is our uninterrupted us time and I cherish it so much.

  5. Our basement is my husbands "man cave" it has all his fishing and hunting stuff and various dead animals on the wall. I would love to use it as a family room/play room but we don't have any other place to put all of his hobby stuff and it's not very child friendly right now. I don't go down there a lot but when I do he gets so excited, he likes when I hang out in "his room"

  7. We have an "adult cave" with minimal toys and our only TV in the basement...it's our after-bedtime child escape too and I agree...definitely good for the mental health! So glad you are enjoying the space and peace!!
