Happy New YOU

The New Year is upon us and, naturally, everyone is trying to decide which New Years resolution they're going to stick to this year.  I've already seen some posts out there with people's word of the year and I truly love reading those.  It inspires me to see everyone's goals for the year, things they want to do, people they want to become. It's like you get to have a fresh, new start every year and isn't that cool?

I thought I knew what this year was going to be about, balance.  I wanted to work on balancing my life. I am not very good at prioritizing and I wanted to get to a place where I felt like I had a grasp on all things, kids, "work", family, friends, fitness, church, all of it.  Balance sounded good.

Upon further review I have decided my word of the year is going to be, "YES".  Pretty general, I know, but it's definitely something I need to work on.  I am a "no" person by default but I think I am a "yes" person. Some examples of my negativity...

Kendall- "Mom can we play with Play-Doh?"
Me- "Not right now, I just wiped off the table."

Jimmy- "Let's go see a movie!"
Me- "Meh...I don't like that kind of movie."

James- "A go outside now?"
Me- "Not now buddy it's too ______"

It's always something.  The funny thing is, I didn't really even realize this about myself until very recently when Jimmy told me that he feels like I see the negative in everything and I'm always worried about what might go wrong. Which blew my mind because I've always thought of myself as a glass half full type.  After he told me this news about myself I started to see it myself and I'd catch myself frequently.

I don't want to be that girl.  I don't want to be the girl who doesn't want to do something for some lame reason.  I don't want to be a pessimist. I want to be the optimist I think I am.  I want to say "YES" more often than I say "NO".  That will obviously be tricky when, say, James wants to run in the snow with no pants, shoes, or socks on BUT in most other areas it will be helpful.

A lady, friend, from church told us in our bible study that she started saying "YES" to everything without even telling anyone and was blown away at how it positively affected her life last year.  My immediate thought was, "Hmm... I should do that" and then I didn't really think about it again.  That was two months ago.  Then when it came to resolution time and thinking about a word of the year I remembered what she said that day.

This is a resolution that won't fizzle out.  It won't apply to just one area of my life and hold no weight elsewhere.  No.  In fact it will apply to my entire life.  My marriage, my family, my friendships, my fitness, everything.  I'm going to be a new, better person once this is all said and done, I just know it.

In fact I've created a motivation group based on just this.  Saying "YES" to what feels good, what YOU want to do, what makes YOU happy.  It's called Happy New YOU and it's a private group on Facebook.  We're going to talk about anything from family, friends, fitness, fun, faith, and everything in between.  We have 150 ladies in there right now and we have moms, wives, working, stay-at-home, people who want to share and inspire.  It's going to be a lot of fun and it starts Monday, if you'd like to join {leave a message in the comments or send me a friend request on Facebook}.

I hope you all have a safe and happy new year!  Here's to 2016!

  1. What a great word!! The word "Yes" is so inspiring heading into the new year!

I wrote "What will you be in 2016" as a way to introduce the word I picked for the year, which is, FEARLESS! I want to be Fearless in 2016!!

I love the idea of picking one word to focus on for the new year. I think it makes New Year Resolutions easier to attain. :)

    Happy New Year!

    2. My word is intentional. Being an intentional daughter of Christ, wife, mom, sister of Christ, servant, graduate student, and teacher. Being intentional in everything I do.

  3. Yes should probably be my word too. But I chose push instead. I feel like I just settled this year and next year I need to really push life to the limits! Happy New Year! Id love to join the group.

  5. I would love to join the group! I will request you on FB.

My gut reaction is usually "no" with all the "what-ifs" running through my head. I have a 4 month old and everyone jokes how I'll be the bad cop and my husband will be the good cop. I want to be able to let go of some of my anxieties and be able to say yes to my daughter and husband more! Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. Jimmy says the same about me! He says I'm constantly worrying about the logistics of everything instead of just going for it. I feel like I HAVE to worry b/c if I don't who will and what about x, y, and z?! But I'm going to try to let go of that and just LIVE. Of course some circumstances will be easier than others...it'll be a work in progress for sure!

  6. I'm the same way. I always feel like I say yes but I don't. My word for the year is change and it's the perfect word for me for 2016. I actually thought the Facebook group was fitness related only so I haven't paid much attention but now that I know it's more open, I'll watch more closely!

  7. OOH! I love the word "yes!" I think choosing a word for the year is such a great way to stay on track and simplify things. My word this year is "peace." I will consciously pray and choose for peace in all that I do- peace in my choices, peace in my relationships, and peace in my interactions with others. Happy New Year!

  8. What a great word! I tried out a "Summer of YES" one year and loved the constant reminder to put myself out there and make the most of each moment :)
I picked a word for this year too. You can read about it here: http://www.momentaryreality.com/2016/01/one-word-for-2016-pimms-recipe.html

  9. What an awesome word friend - and it fits you so well for the year!
I still remember your post when you said yes for a day and let the kids do as they wished - it has stuck in my mind ever since! Good luck friend x

  10. I like this! I always think of myself as a pretty positive person (especially with juxtaposed with certain family members who are just the most negative Nancy's you ever did meet). I am noticing that with Boomer though I find myself being negative about a lot. I need to work on 'yes' with her. Great post lady.
