Parting Ways

So the other day I talked about testing out The Middle Part {TMP}.  Some of you swore it was something you could only do in middle school but even in middle school I couldn't pull it off.  Today is no different.  Well Jimmy things it looks good so of course I had to ask my readers. What else, right?
I have total hair envy when it comes to TMP.  The celebs make it look amazing, well their hair dressers anyway, and I've officially crowned this girl with the title of Best Hair Ever.
They make it look so easy.
Now that my hair has gotten longer and my bangs are practically grown out {because I'm too lazy to go in for a bang trim, not because I wanted them to} I thought this may be something I could try out.  Honestly I don't think I've ever been able to pull off a middle part.  I think in my sophomore {?} school picture I may have and let me tell you, that should have been illegal.  So yeah.  But dammit if I don't watch Live! With Kelly every day and wonder if I could pull off her signature style.
Normally {on a good hair day} my hair looks something like this.
Minus the somewhat creepy face.
I'm learning how to do the beach waves, slowly but surely, and so I figured I could learn to do TMP too.  Right?
Eh? Maybe?  IDK.
I mean I've done it 2-3 times now so I'm not totally hating it but I think it makes my face look weird.   I guess I won't be giving up the side part but maybe when I'm feeling sassy I'll pull out TMP for fun?
What do you think?

  1. Shannon, I'm one of those people who totally can't pull off TMP. I always feel like my forehead looks MAHOOSIVE if I attempt it, and I certainly don't look a damn thing like Kelly, Lauren Conrad or Carrie Underwood.

I like your hair best in the first picture, where it's to one side, because I really think it suits your face. But in all honesty I don't like it looks 'bad' with TMP.

Where have you been learning to do your beach waves? My hair is naturally fro-like so I'd love to learn to tame it a bit with pretty soft curls!

  2. I have toyed with the idea of TMP. I'm glad to see someone else is trying it out too! I think it looks good on you! I still can't figure out how to get the long wavy curls...still working on that part!

  3. I think it looks so cute.

I had the beach waves down until I cut my hair off now I can't fix this shorter do! It frustrates me. I may try again but I'm ready for it to be longer (what's new?)

  4. You can definitely pull it off! You look cute! I had TMP in middle school and I looked like a hippie. No ready for that again. I've done a shallow side part, but that's as far as I'm brave enough to go.

  5. I don't think it looks bad at all!! You should start rocking that!!! I can only pull off TMP when I straighten my hair. Otherwise it looks like a shit sandwich!

  6. VS models are what make me try TMP! LOL.

  7. It might be the sepia tone, but your TMP shots totally reminded me of the 70's! I mean I was just a wee babe in my mom's belly back then, but the hair totally made me have a flashback to the 70's! I like you with a side part and/or in color the best.

Let's talk about your beach waves!!! They are what's awesome! You're seriously mastering them and they are amaze!

  8. I think it looks great both ways. But I'm with everyone else....HOW ARE YOU DOING THE WAVES??? I think we need a tutorial stat!

  9. I've found that I can only pull it off if my hair has a lot of volume. If it's "flat" aka what it is every day when I do nothing to it, it just emphasizes it. And the trick is that the volume has to be up top and not just at the bottom (unless you like the triangle look)...

But sometimes it just depends on face shape too... who knows??

  10. Totally with everyone else here, show us how to do the waves! My hair is a big frizzy curl.

  11. Honestly, I don't think TMP is your best look. It makes your face look a bit long.

Another girl who can't do a middle part

  12. I'm kinda with Amanda. Sometimes you just gotta go with your natural part.

  14. ... I so wish I could rock TMP a la SJP. In your photos you look way retro with it! Throw on your aviator sunnies and you could totes be a Charlie's Angel! I think it's a good change up from TSSP (the standard side part!)

  15. I actually like the TMP look on you. Not as much as the side part but you can definitely pull it off. I don't think I look that great with TMP either so I'll do mine slightly off center instead.

  16. I like the middle part on you! The funny thing is, I have always had a center part, my hair just has always naturally parted that way! I have always wished I could pull off the side part thing!

  17. You got it, dude! I like it.

I TMP'd the first time last summer when my bangs were of awkward length... but they were still too short to really work. BUT! I kept at it and am still TMPing today. Practice makes perfect! (more like, keep wearing it and it won't look so weird to you anymore)

  18. I like that it makes you look equal parts retro and modern. Those beach waves are KILLER.

  19. The middle part has never worked on me. I had bangs in middle school specifically because the middle part was the style and I couldn't pull it off!

  20. Looks good Shannon! I think you've just got to adjust to it mentally because it looks good. I do middle parts once a week or two but I did a lot of playing to find styles and looks I like. For me, I don't often leave the hair framing my face down, I do braids or pulls those little wisps back. Keep going, I promise you will master it in no time.
