Sitting This One Out

Have you guys gone shopping lately? Like at a mall? To stores like PacSun and Buckle and Forver21? Me either {pretty sure none of them have or will carry maternity}, until this weekend.

Holy 1990s batman! I swear there were printed floral jeans in the storefronts that I wore in 5th grade, no joke. They were Jordache and I had the matching denim vest that went with them. So did my best friend. And before either of us would wear it we'd call the other. Some days we wanted to match other times we didn't. But never in my wildest dreams did I think these fashions would come back.

I know, I know, they say fashion comes back around every 20 years but I was really hoping that the 90s would skip that trend.

Jimmy and I walked int PacSun, Jimmy's usual go-to for summer clothes, and we were both like "???".  My husband is no trendsetter by any means but he does like to have some cool threads every summer and this  year he was all "I think I'm going to sit this one out".

He came home and got on my Pinterest account and started typing in "men's 2013 summer fashions" and was like "dude, do I really need to get these pointy toed oxfords?"  and I quickly shut that shit down.  No way.  That's not how we roll.  I mean he's just now getting into Sperrys.

Don't even get me started on the denim bustiers and high-waisted jean shorts {with a button fly I may add} that were staring me in the face at H&M and Delia*s.  Excuse me? I'm just waiting to see the "BUTTON YOUR FLY" tees on display now.  Please tell me I'm not the only one who remembers those.

Walking around was no different.  A girl with a pair of acid-wash, cut-offs that could have passed for underwear.  Another with holes in her {footed} pantyhose with sandals.  Neon high-tops.  Girls with half their heads shaved.  I can't.

Is it because I hit 30?  Am I an old fuddy duddy?  Call me crazy but I'm usually somewhat hip to the trends but I have to say I am happy to be knocked up this summer to avoid all the craziness in the fashion world.  I'm certain you won't see ripped leather jeggings and crop tops in any maternity store {at least I hope not}.  So I'm gladly "sitting this one out" with my husband.

Here's to sundresses, pastel crop jeans, and denim jackets.  Maybe next summer, fashion.  Maybe next summer.

  1. BAHAHAHAHA!! I'll be sitting this one out too! I can't believe that floral jeans are back! Ridiculous! No, I will not be wearing neon or *gasp* neon LACE tops, thanks.

  2. Even Meijer has some pretty awful summer clothes, all I wanted were some basic long jean shorts. Nope, they are all JEAN UNDERWEAR, seriously?!?! I saw some girls at the mall with the floral pants on and neon, one shoulder tops.....I have no words.

  3. 90's fashion should NOT be coming back. In fact, I'm pretty cool with most from the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's not coming back. Blech. Those clothes are hideous!

  5. I was just thinking the other day while I was shopping that this was a good summer to be pregnant because I didn't feel sad about missing out on ANY of the clothes in the regular sections.

  6. I agree wholeheartedly! I hate alllllll these "fashions." how is any of it flattering?! I also think if you wore it the first time it was in style, you should NOT be wearing it the second time around.

  8. The 90's were the worst fashion decade. This probably explains why I think most "fashion bloggers" outfits are hideous. If I saw people wearing that shit out and about I would snicker at them.

  9. Omg yes!!! To your photo, to the e-card, yes. Dear lord, 90's fashion does not need a come back. We'll be sitting this one out as well :)

  11. you are soooo right!!! I don't remember the 90's fashion too much (born in 87), but I remember enough and have seen enough pictures to know that it wasn't too pretty. Im sticking with dresses and skirts of the maxi genre.

  12. It's crazy out there! Half the stuff the youngins wear doesn't match! Thinking they don't have a mirror in their house! :)

  13. It is exhausting to search Forever21 for decent summer clothes.

I just remember us wearing this stuff in the 90's because that's all there was. That's the only crap available. Today, there are so many choices. Why wear pants that give you camel toe when you can wear ANYTHING ELSE. Why wear acid wash when you can wear ANYTHING ELSE. And don't even get me started on the crop tops. 90210, here we come.

  14. You know what burns me? That top in the upper right hand corner. I see, on F21's website, "bra tops." Excuse me? So, it's cool for teenage girls to wear BRAS as tops now? That's disgusting.

  17. I haven't been to a mall in ages, I really don't like shopping anyways {I know, gasp, I am a horrible "girl"...what girl doesn't love to shop?...this one!} Anyways, my hubby and I have Disneyland annual passes since we live in SoCal {and the munchkin is still free for a whole 2 more months}. We try to go as often as we can. We went this past Saturday and HOLY HELL... the 90's broke loose on all the little teeny-boppers! I even mentioned it to the hubs "there are WAY too many teens here today" They were ALL dressed inappropriately to be wandering around "the happiest place on Earth". I couldn't believe that their parents let them out of the house dressed like that! Or maybe they didn't, maybe these kids pulled the whole, change in the bathroom deal. Anyway, I think I saw WAY too many pairs of super short, high waisted shorts on teenaged girls. If you are an old fuddy-duddy, then so am I..and I think I just may be proud of it this time! I will sit this one out with you and your hubby too...and I'm not even pregnant!

  18. Thank you for not making me feel alone with this fashion crap! I mean seriously, I'm just now getting into the neon colored sports workout gear. I cannot even get into the whole trend thing of those see through shirts with bras as the only thing underneath! Come on fools get your sheep together! I find half the crap unreasonably ugly and not functional on a daily basis. :)

  19. You're in luck. Forever21 does have maternity! I think online only. Other stores 30 year olds shouldn't shop at: Aeropostale, Vanity, Deb, Rue 21.

  20. My word! I haven't been to the mall in about two years so for me this would have been like a culture shock. I used to have that first one on the right. What was I thinking? I would have never thought these trends would return. I was hoping they were locked in a vault like the disney movies, never to be released again. I am happy to be sitting this one out as well.....

  21. You should be me trying to find something "age appropriate" for my 14 year old to wear this summer. Not an easy task!

  23. AHHHH!!! there is so much saved by the bell in that - can't handle it!

  24. There is some UGLY stuff out there right now. It might have been ok once, but it's all just horrid! The neon makes me crazy as well!

  25. OMG I posted something about this a few months ago when I took my 11-year old shopping. Some things are better left in the PAST. Forever.

  26. OMG, I'm seriously dying over here, you are so funny! Makes me happy that I'm pregnant this summer as well, though I'm not really one to get into fashion hypes considering they are changing all the time. Jeans and a graphic t-shirt suit me just fine, lol!

  28. Agreed. That's all that needs to be said about that!

  29. To be honest, I'm kiiiiiind of into it. Kind of. I like the rotating trends. I remember, as a 6th grader, looking at old family photos lolling my face off at bell bottoms. Then 8th grade rolls around and I'm wearing jeans with the biggest "flares" I can find. Then "omg I can't believe we all used to wear STRETCH PANTS!" and now we're all about "leggings". If nothing came back, we'd probably just run out of stuff to wear. Your sundresses and pastel crops came started somewhere in a different time! (70's and 60's respectively, eh?) I'm rambling.

Believe me, I'm not sticking up for some of the ridiculous outfits I see or that I particularly like any of those outfits up there and I'll pass on vagina shorts any day of the week, but I can't say that I would pass on high-waisted mom-jean shorts and a crop top if I had the bod for it and the places to go in it, but my thighs, gut, and lack of music festival attendance tell me not to wear that shit.

I suppose all of this does come with age and mental maturity. If I were younger, I'd probably wear more of the crazier trends, just like I did when I *was* younger.

Also, I have a pair of floral jeans. I just choose to pair them with a feminine top rather than a tee that I paid someone else to cut the sleeves off of. haha!

  30. I can't stand all the 80's and 90's clothing that is out there right now. I keep trying to go shopping for myself, and it ends up being a major fail because I hate everything!!!
