Monday Morning Coffee Talk

Good Morning!  I slept awful last night, how bout you?  I swear I saw every hour last night even though James slept {is still sleeping} all night and Kendall only woke up twice to potty.  I was restless, couldn't get comfortable, was hot, you name it.  Jimmy woke me up at 6 am because he couldn't find his badge for work and I said, to myself, "forget it!  I'm just getting up!"  So, here I sit and I'm going to just pretend that I'm meeting a friend for coffee and we're going to chat.  OK?

***
I'm kind of over the whole Elf on the Shelf thing.  We started him, on accident, way too early this year and, well, he's lost his luster.  Every night, just as I've climbed in bed, I think, "SHIT!  I didn't move Rich!" and I crawl out of bed to find some magical place to put him.  Truth be told, we have not been creative at all this year. Last year, our first year, I went all out and every night was some new elf antics.  This year?  He's just in a new hiding place because I just can't.  Our advent calendar, on the other hand, I'm loving.  Kendall wakes up every day and says, "Is it time to open our first envelope?" even though it's the 15th one, she still calls it the first and I kinda love that.  We've had a couple of days we've had to "fudge" for whatever reason but overall it's a hit and we're loving all the special memories.  Today we make ornaments!

***
I hosted a cookie exchange party at my house yesterday, for the first time.  My "blog friends" and my "in real life friends" got to meet so now when I tell my IRL friends "Yeah, so and so, my blog friend..." they don't think I'm a crazy person anymore.  It was so much fun having my two worlds come together, if you will.  I had lots of kids running around, way too many cookies, and lots of laughs.  And, guess what?  I didn't Instagram a moment of it!  It was kind of liberating.

***
Speaking of, do you think that social media has kind of taken the "be here, now-ness" out of events?  I feel like, anymore, people {myself included} are so quick to take a pic for Instagram or to post on Facebook that we aren't actually just living in the moment anymore?  I kinda hate that, ya know?  Like yesterday instead of worrying about sharing my delicious adult hot chocolate I just enjoyed drinking it with my closest friends, no photo necessary.  Before we went to bed last night I told Jimmy, "You know, I didn't get on Instagram at all today!" like it was some sort of victory, and, truth be told, it kind of was.  Pathetic but true.  I'm going to be better about that.

***
I have had our Christmas cards for a week or so now yet they're still sitting, addressed, on the counter waiting for stamps.  Ugh, I loathe going to the post office, especially with two tiny tots in tow, but I guess I better get on it seeing as Christmas is less than 10 days away.  We've been receiving cards upon cards and I have all but two photo cards.  I got to thinking, when I was growing up we NEVER sent a photo card or a photo in our card, just a plain Christmas card from the giant box that you buy at Target.  Now everyone sends a photo card and I love it.  I love seeing the people we love and what their families look like, what they've been up to, etc.  I love that this tradition is changing.

***
I think we've reached the end of napping days, for Kendall.  She hasn't taken a nap for the past four days.  You guys, I'm so sad about this.  I look forward to naps.  It's my time to get things done, whether it be laundry, prepping for dinner, checking emails, catching up on the DVR, whatever.  Luckily she's been going into her room for at least two hours, one day I even thought she had fallen asleep because she was being so good and quiet.  If she does that then I'm OK with no naps because it still gives me a chance to collect my thoughts and recharge MY battery.  So, I guess it's not so bad actually.

***
We still have the majority of our Christmas shopping to do.  Like, we've only bought for two people so far.  I hate that we are last minute shoppers, hate it, it stresses me out.  I always say, every year, that I'm going to be one of those people who starts shopping EARLY and has it all done by some magical before Christmas date, in my head.  It never happens.  And this also means we're actually going to have to go out in the crazy to shop because I don't trust that stuff will get here in time, at this point.

***
I need help.  Baby James has chubby little feet and no socks will stay on him.  He kick, kick, kicks all day and I'm constantly putting his socks on.  I need to know what your favorite baby socks are, ones that will stay put!  I used to love the Circo ones from Target but now those aren't staying on either.  I've even bought bigger sizes, 6-12 months, but he still kicks them off.  Little booger.  So share with me your sock secrets, please.

  1. The socks from VonMaur are the only ones that will stay on my kids {the first year anyways}. I think their like $6 for 2 pair. Not great, but not too bad if you stay up on laundry! :)

  2. UGH...baby socks drive me crazy! I feel that they are so expensive, you can never find them in the size you want and they never stay on! I've discovered the white Old Navy socks are a good price & stay on Kimber's feet pretty well. I bought two packages as stocking stuffers!!

  3. I must say, I haven't tried the Elf on the Shelf with my kids. I approached them with the idea and they were not amused with the Elf being in the house!! I agree with you about social media. There is times that I want to share something and take a pic of something and its like "put down your phone!!" P.S. I am not sure about the baby socks. I used the Target brand as well, but my youngest is going to be 7 so that was a while ago. I am currently pregnant so I will be checking to see what others say. I usually have chunky babies so this is a plus!!

  4. same thing happening here with elf -- everyone being sick, elf was the last thing on my mind... I get socks from babies r us ours has a good variety and sizes and I love the ones with the gripper on the bottom when we are at home (sometimes hard to put on shoes)

  5. Hi...I had the same problem, look on amazon for Robeez socks, they have a little "band" at the ankle that usually helps until the end of the of the day, a little pricey, but worth it!

  7. At our parties we have a basket by the door with a note that says "be with the one's you're with". Everyone is to put their cell phones in it. Of course, parents will check their phones from time to time but they go right back in the basket.

  10. Such a cute idea for a post! Our elf got the bible out and open to Luke 2. We are going to focus on Jesus this week. He is going to be coloring a nativity coloring page tomorrow. We are pretty last minute shoppers. We are doing Christmas with Hubby's family next weekend and got all their gifts pretty much this weekend. Now I have to wrap ALL week! I think a lot of people are slacking on their cards. Last year we would get a card in the mail every day. Definitely not that way this year :(

  11. I am actually planning a facebook fast come January, and I'm doing a post at the New Orleans Moms Blog about it. It is so freeing to step away from social media because you are actually living it instead of documenting it. There was a video online that really nailed it, I can't remember where I saw it. probably facebook. lol

good for you for enjoying that quality friend time!

  13. I could never keep socks on my youngest, and finally resorted to those little soft leather shoes (I always got ours from Target, but there are definitely more expensive versions) over the top of her socks. They are snug, so she wouldn't kick them off. Otherwise, if we were just bumming around at home, I had her in footie PJ's. Always.

  14. I didnt instagram yesterday either!!! It was pretty awesome. There were whole stretched of time that I didn't even touch the damn thing. Also your IRL friends are pretty damn cool :) No help with socks. I just let baby Boomer have naked feet...what are ya gonna do? Elf on the shelf? Girl I'm so glad that didn't get popular til Booms was a little older. Someone asked her about it and she wrinkled up her nose and goes 'My mom doesn't do that stuff!' Damn skippy :)

  15. someone bought us a 3 pack of nike socks and crue is just starting to outgrow them. i am dreading that because i love them so much and they stay on so perfectly for him. plus they have the cute little grippies but i don't even want to know how much it costs for 3 pairs of baby nike socks. le sigh.
POST OFFICE. dread that place. haaaaate it.
we went to santaland and a christmas lights parade on saturday downtown - didn't instagram any of it. of course we took some pictures with our dslr but nothing for instagram. at first i was like aww i didn't post anything. but shortly after it felt liberating indeed! especially with all the creepers now and people stealing pictures etc etc. i need to find a new obsessive way to document everything with crue for ourselves.
cookies. i want some. wish i lived by you!!

  16. My rule w/ my boys is if they aren't sleeping they have to have 'quiet' time in their rooms for at least an hour. Like you I need that peace and quiet in the afternoon to recharge myself and not go insane. It's worked all these years! Just a tip.

As for socks, I don't know about those but I found these little, sort of, leather shoes for my last little guy. I have no idea where (Target more than likely) or what they are called, but they came in a little clear package. The top of the shoe had elastic in it so it snugged onto his feet really well and he could never get them off. I did have socks on him still, these just held it in place and when he was a little older he couldn't pull them off so his tootsies stayed warm. Sorry for no name!! But hopefully Target still has them or s/t similar. Good luck!

  19. I'm a Christmas shopping procrastinator, too! I still only have a few stocking stuffers purchased! You are not alone. I never get my shopping done early. It just sneaks up on me....

  20. I've had the same sock struggle with my 6 month old for the past few months, and then someone passed along a pair of footed pants... Amazing! Whoever thought those up is a genius. (They're like these: http://www.target.com/p/burt-s-bees-baby-newborn-organic-2-pack-footed-pant-set-cloud/-/A-14433628) I've since thrifted another pair and have been swapping them out (sometimes layering a pair of "real" pants over the top - I have to take the pants off to change him anyway, so may as well) and occasionally braving REAL socks (long, knee socks - thrifted, so I'm unsure of the brand).

  21. I had serious sock issues with mine when he was little and now he just turns four and I loved the socks from Kohls so much that he still wears them (of course in a bigger size). Here is the link for them and I am telling you totally worth it. He wears them in the summer or winter and they are still the only socks he will keep on and not take off.

  25. I never stated Elf on the Shelf for the simple fact that I would never remember to move it- ever. I am putting on my 2014 list to only get on a social media site once a day, if that, and not record so much of my live on them. I will leave it all for a once a day post on my blog. I am normally a last minute shopper but this year I hit up ebates and amazon on cyber-monday and completed it all in one day. As far as sock for the little guy... we have the same issue with O, he just hates things on his feet, period. So much that when we put the footies pj's on him he is attempting to pull the feet off- if there are characters on those footies it really pisses him off, he will pull and pull until he gets mad. Thanks for having coffee with me- it was nice having someone to talk to.

  26. Hanes socks. They come in a six pack at target. They're the only ones I could keep on Jamie's feet! I love them, they're still the only socks I buy! We always did ok with the ankle length but the also have crew length.
