It's Tuesday And We're Teething

James is getting his first tooth.  It's kinda cute the way he flicks it with his tongue.  It's not cute when his little cheekies are so rosy, he's whiny, seems really uncomfortable and cranky.  With Kendall I never knew she was teething.  She never got the fever, diarrhea, ear infections, nothing.  I would just all the sudden notice a new tooth.

James seems like he's going to have a harder time though.

So...these Amber teething necklaces...legit?

I will say when I saw these a couple years ago I chalked it up to a hippie thing and didn't think too much of it but nowadays it seems like more and more {non-hippies} are using them so it has me thinking maybe there's something to it.

Here are my questions:

  1. Where does one buy them?
  2. Does it matter if it's worn around the neck vs. on the ankle?  I'd rather him wear it on his ankle, it freaks me out a bit to have him wear a necklace, but I feel like to be most effective it should be closest to his mouth?  No?
  3. Do the different colors have different healing properties or is it just a matter of preference?
And thank you.

  1. The amber necklace definitely worked for my daughter when she was teething and it helped her just be a generally happier child. I also have an amber necklace that I wear because of migraines so I can attest to the fact that it worked for me too. I bought both of ours on amber24.com. They are legit and have the cheapest prices by far! The general rule for amber is that the lighter the stone the stronger it is and it's true. You should also stick with ones that say "raw" amber because it's not polished therefore the stone is in its original condition. The way it works is it secretes succinic acid into your skin which has anti inflamatory and healing capabilities so a raw unpolished stone is best. oh...and for wearing the necklace on his neck vs. ankle, it doesnt really matter but dont worry about putting it around his neck because each bead is strung individually with a knot in between so if there is extra tension it will break but not come apart in a million pieces, no beads will fall off :)

  2. My kids (now 2.5 and 6) managed to get through teething without them. I had a hard time not knowing how much of the succinic acid was being absorbed through my child's skin. From what I can find (excluding blog posts), there are no real studies on it and how it affects kids. Also, I find that it prevents them from ever having to deal with pain as most babies wear them all the time and don't know how to cope without them. So, does one get addicted to it's soothing properties? If it does actually work, how much is it changing your kid's behaviour? For me, there was always something else that could soothe my boys... frozen washcloth, a teething toy, a cuddle...

  3. We've used them for all four of our kids. Get raw amber! We love them from Inspired By Finn. You want him to wear it as close to the source of pain as possible. So around the neck would be ideal. Mine wore them 24/7 and we never had a problem. But if you're worried about nighttime, just secure it around his ankle and put socks or jammies over the top until morning.

  4. Gunner has one and I can't say if it work for sure or not but I thought I'd give it a try. My daughter was just as happy as could be while teething but my boy??? Well I chalk it up to man pain but that kid was a wreck so I was desperate. He still wears it around his neck and we have no problems with him pulling on it or anything. My husband claims it works and refuses to take it off of him. I'm still on the fence about whether it really works or not. I don't know if I bought the raw amber or not…probably not but now I wish I did. I believe I just bought mine off Amazon. Good luck and let us know what you do and if it works. We still have some two year molars that need to come in and those suckers can be a real bitch.

  5. Chase had an anklet from inspired by Finn. I think it helped. My husband doesn't. People asking about it/making fun of him were kind of annoying. Yes get raw. I swear it said don't get it wet or get soap or lotion on it and I see kids on ig with it on in the bath. It didn't change his behavior and he still knows how to cope with pain. The bad thing about the anklet was how beat up it got since he was a rough and tough boy. It had two clasps so it was adjustable and one got messed up and we eventually lost it. I don't know how much of his fussiness was teething now. He did 2 year molars a lot better than the other teeth but maybe kids are different. Idk!

  9. I think they are legit as long as it is the real deal. My husband hippie co-worker gave one to us for Paisley and I wasn't buying it until....I was out of options and coffee and remembered I had it. I swear that it changed my life. Her runny nose, crankiness, rosy cheeks and all over madness stopped. I had her wear it around her neck and took it off when she was sleeping. It never gets caught around her neck or anything but it does make me a bit nervous. I didn't know you could put it other places for it to be effective so maybe I will try that? I think you can order them offline but I have no idea from where. I also started using the natural teething tablets and they work well too. I used them for my toddler around age one (Paisley is almost 10 months) and they seemed to help her too but not sure if James is too young for them!!

I would say...definitely try the amber though!

  10. Thanks for posting this. I'm totally stealing the advice! My daughter never had issues with teething. My little guy? Horrible with teething. And he got his first two at four months! Hoping a teething necklace will help. I already ordered one but might order another one based on all of this advice! Hope it helps Mr. Weston!

  11. I would check with your dr. Just because something is 'natural' doesn't necessarily mean it is good for you....remember arsenic is 'natural' too. As a toddler teacher I worry about it being around the neck due to other children pulling on it or it getting caught on objects during regular play or crawling, etc. I personally agree with the poster that said dealing with pain can be a good experience. Either way you decide, Good Luck!

  12. Hey Shannon - here's a post written by my IRL friend Ashley Paige last year on her amber necklace experience with her son. Spoiler alert: She loves them. Tell her Christine sent ya. (or don't, lol, I'm only kidding.) http://www.iloveyoumorethancarrots.com/2013/02/the-skinny-on-amber-teething-necklaces.html

  13. We used one with Lexi. She was a pretty bad teether. As soon as we put that sucker on, after a few hours, I kid you not she was a different kid. We used ours until she had tubes put on at 18 months. At that point we took it off and threw it away bc they say they're only good for 6 months. Now my little man is a teething monster. He is about to get his first tooth and will be 4 months on the 18th. Crazy kids teething early. I am still very torn on whether or not to get him one. Not really sure why though? Another thing that is really helping him is Sophie the Giraffe. A $20 dog toy basically? Yeah, it is the only one he can hold and will chew on. We don't leave anywhere without it. He lovessssss it!

  14. I am with you on the amber necklaces. If you get one let me know how it works for you. Oliver is crawling and pulling himself up but he isn't teething yet.
