{My} Mommy Secrets

It's no joke that mommy-hood is hard.  And toddler mommy-hood is even harder.  Gone are the days of napping with your snugly baby on your chest and using swings for entertainment.  Now we deal with hitting, throwing things, refusal to eat, and molars.  This is hard work, yo.
So there are great inventions to help get us through these trials and tribulations.  Some of these I just found out about thanks to The Twitter and later kicked myself and felt like a big mom FAIL for not knowing them sooner.  So you can thank me later.
*Kendall's never been a bad teether.  I mean her first 6 teeth popped through and I didn't even know she was getting them.  We never dealt with ear infections, diaper rashes, sleepless nights {don't hate}, runny noses, nada.  Until now {dum dum dum dum duuummm}.  So of course I tweeted about the horrid 3 night screamfest {OK it wasn't really THAT bad but after months of STTN it seemd that way}. And I got a flood of responses recommending Hylands Teething Tablets.
Most of the ladies informed me that Orajel, while numbs the gums, makes the gums hard making it tougher for those pesky toofers to pop through.  OK we had been using Orajel so talk about MAJOR mom guilt.  OMG why had no one told me about these miracle pills sooner?  They are homeopathic and they soften the gums making it easier for the teeth to break through {angels singing}.  So you bet your bottom dollar I ran to Kroger after work that day and picked up a box for Kendall {and Smith}.  And guess what?  That night she slept like a baby.  Coincidence?  I think not.  If you have a teething tot I suggest you run, not walk, to your local wherever and pick up a box or five.
*When Kendall was first born, I'm talking we hadn't even left the hospital yet, the nurses told us she had a diaper rash.  I'm still not sure how this is possible considering she had been naked, in my belly, not wearing diapers but whatever they're the "experts", right?  So as they handed us this tub of "prescription" diaper rash cream, I rolled my eyes.  We had an AWESOME nurse, who told us on our way out, "if you guys run out of this don't call the pediatrician, it's just equal parts Maalox and Aquaphor".  Ok whatever baby nurse, my newborn never needed this fancy cream.
BUT now, along with the teething, she has developed a nasty diaper rash.  I broke out this year old cream and said rash was gone in less than 24 hours.  It's THAT good.  So good that I even refered it to my cousin {who's daughter is only 4 days younger than KP} and she tried it and it worked like a dream for her too. So no more Desitin days, adios A+D ointment, and bye-bye Butt Paste, this "prescription" stuff is where it's at.
So yeah only two secrets really but they are GOOD ones.  Trust.  If you are struggling in either of these departments you can go ahead and send me gifts of appreciation now.  Cash also accepted.

  2. Great tips! I love the teething tablets, those things are miraculous! I've never heard of that combo for diaper rash, but regular diaper rash stuff never worked very well for my kids. They didn't get many rashes, but when they did I used Calmoseptine. For some reason a lot of pharmacies leave it behind the counter and you have to ask for it (it's NOT prescription though), but it works too. Also since you mentioned Aquaphor, that is one of my favorite products ever. I use it for stubborn dry skin, minor scrapes and cuts, and painful chapped lips. It's the best!

  3. I am having the.exact.same.issues with my 15 month old! (along with his first ever ear infection PLUS a cold on top of it!). He had awful diarrhea I could only attribute to getting all 4 molars (plus 2 other teeth) at the same time. I had been using desitin and guess what? the dr's office told me that the zinc in all white diaper creams BURNS like a mother and NOT to use it! Up until now it worked like a charm, but this tooth-related diarrhea was a whole different game. you know what works? plain aquaphor. or vaseline. I imagine your aquaphor + maalox would work even better! all that to say, white diaper cremes are the devil and i'm afraid to use them now! I haven't tried teething tablets (he's sleeping fine at night, just won't eat a lot during the day). but i think i'll get some. thanks for the advice!

  8. Ok the Orajel, what the heck? I didn't know that it made the gums tougher. I will be getting teething tablets tomorrow. My 13 month old was up crying 4-5 times last night and woke up with a nasty diaper rash. She must be teething.

  9. We use the teething tabs now too, but I have never heard of the other combo. How cool is that? If it works, that would be a money saving miracle since we spend about $10 per tub of ointment. Thanks for this :-)

PS: Thank you so much for stopping by, too and for your sweet words :-)

  12. FYI. I went out to buy some of the Hylands teething tablets after reading this post and was told that they were recently recalled. Here's the information so you can check which ones you may have. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-20020623-10391704.html
