Happy Halloween

I know what you're thinking, "umm...Shannon Halloween isn't for a few more weeks", and you're right, it's not. But I'm not wishing you a Happy Halloween {so there!} but rather sharing how we will have a happy Halloween.

I had hopes of Kendall wearing some super adorable, totally unique, costume. Pinterest lead me to this site and my mind went crazy.  I mean I do you see that adorable Snow White tutu costume?  Gah, I die!  I wanted that for Kendall. But, much like my Easter basket realization, I knew that Halloween wasn't about me anymore and I no longer get to chose what she dresses up as {already}.

I saw an a-dora-ble owl costume at Target a couple weeks ago and I thought for sure that was IT and then I went to have her try it on and she outright refused.  "No mommy!  I no like that!" were the words she said, to be exact.  Oh I fear her teenage years.  The only costumes she was interested in were princesses.  She had her little green eyes focused on a "Ci-er-ella" {Cinderella} gown but sadly the smallest size available was a 4T.  Why?  Costume makers out there, WHY is a 4T the smallest in the Disney princess gowns?  Answer me that.

I knew a princess had to be her costume this year.  It had to be.  It was the only thing that I knew would make her so happy.  So, thanks to the Internet and some great Ebates deals I scored a very generic princess gown for less than $10.  Yep.  It didn't come with a crown, or shoes, or a wand, or even a princess emblem sewn on it but hot damn if she doesn't love it.  Her reaction when I showed her, imagine the middle picture with her saying "OH GOSH!!".  Yeah, she was that happy.  I mean I had to let her try it on, obviously, and she didn't want to take it off.  I consider that a win.

Again, like with the Easter basket, why bother with something that I know I'll have to fight her to wear when I can make her perfectly happy with a cheap, store-bought number that she will willingly put on.  Then I can just fight with her to take it off.

So, this year here you see little kids dressed up as Superman, Wonder Woman or Harry Potter that were made from scratch, their mom probably broke a nail sewing and that they probably stressed over for far too long, my little princess will be happily skipping down the street in her no-frills "a really long pink dress" having the time of her life.  She will probably end up sleeping in the damn thing and that is a-OK with me. You know what is also going to be OK?  If she gets chocolate on it, rips it, or gets a sucker stuck in the tulle.  You know why?  Because it cost $10 and I didn't shed blood, sweat, and tears obsessing over it.  Take that Pinterest, bet you can't say that about your hand-sewn sushi roll.

And that is how we will have a happy Halloween.

  1. She is a beautiful princess! On a side note...check out the Disney store online after Halloween. We bought Mia some dress up clothes (aka Halloween costumes) there really cheap and they hold up well.

  2. Her costume is adorable...and so is she! You're right, why bother fighting with her to wear something she doesnt want to. I say the princess costume is a win! I just commented on one of your posts saying we hadnt even thought about halloween costumes yet and dont you know, last night, I went into a local consignment shop to browse and right by the door there was this adorable costume that originally cost $50 for $5! I grabbed it in 2 seconds flat! So, Halloween for us is done!

  4. She is so cute! Those are the BEST costumes. My friends and I played dress up and did Halloween in the bridesmaid dresses worn at my parents wedding - they were rags by the time I grew out of them. I can see this dress will probably go the same route :)

  6. OH girl as long as she is happy you are good to go. I don't even fight it anymore. Mikayla is being this awful looking skeleton. Now Hadley I have control over, ha! So a little piggy it is.

  7. This was a great post for me to read. I am "that" mom who feels like I have to hand make everything and it has to be perfect. I have always been this way but even more so now that I have my daughter. I have slowly but surely been learning to let that go and realizing it doesn't matter. Just as you said as long as they are happy and having fun that's what matters and what's the point of getting stressed out and ruining the magic of the holiday. It is after all, all about them :) Thanks

  8. Babies R Us had some Disney princess costumes in all sizes, they were $32 but I used a coupon. HOWEVER, I think Kendall looks adorable, and when she looks back on this, all she's going to think is "Wow, I look so cute!" and not "Man, I wish mom had hand-sewn me into a sushi roll". Have fun!

  9. Too cute!!!!! Maybe next year she will let you pick out something for her, though it sounds like she is already a pretty independent little thing. My neice wants to be a skunk for halloween, she is so not a princess lol

  12. I bought Hunter a $15 costume from Old Navy. I figure he's 10 months old he won't know any different, I'm only dressing him up to get a picture for the photo albumn. I don't have the time or skill to handmake something that he will probably scream in or puke on anyway.

I think she looks precious. I always wanted to be a princess for Halloween too.

  13. Haha, Michael is wearing his fireman costume for the 3rd year in a row! He refuses to wear anything else and luckily it still fits! However this will be the last year it fits for sure, at least I got my moneys worth! Definitely not about us...

  14. My 3 year old daughter spotted a little mermaid costume at costco in september. It was HUGE! She still wears a 3T and this thing was a 4-6. But there was no way we were leaving the store without it. She loves loves loves it. Even though it hangs off of her, she looks like a doll. And thats all that matters, that she loves it more than any other costume out there.

  15. Ah, what a pretty princess. Carter has been picking for about 4 years now and as much as I want to pick it's something I have to let him do, so far it's nothing scary and bloody so I am good with it. Usually we (Tim and I) try to pay a part in his costume. The one year he went as spiderman and I found the spiderman body t-shirts at Target and a spiderman costume for our puppy so we went as the spiderman family. He loved it. This year he is going to be Super Mario so Tim is going to dress and Luigi and I am going to have the top part of the princesses dress and a crown. I can't wait for Halloween... I hope our is as happy as yours sounds like it is going to be. Oh, my mom offered to buy Carter's costume this year so to me it was free... LOVE cheap costumes :-)

  19. Hahaha, you are freaking hilarious! I got some brilliant idea to make Rhys a Lightning McQueen car to wear for Halloween out of cardboard, and when I Googled how to make one, I saw a ton for sale. Thank goodness I didn't waste all that time because now he's going to be a fireman! Kendall is just too previous as a princess - I love her expression in that middle picture!!
